Wanna-be electronic musician with a Mac -- what's the first music software to get?
I just bought a MacBook Pro and want to start making music on it, but I am a complete newbie to using my laptop to make music.
I know there's a few different software packages to use and that I will likely need to use several different programs, like ProTools, Ableton, Cubase, along with things like a MIDI controller or an audio interface.
If you were me and just starting out, what is the very next step you would take?
Take an electronic music or recording studio class at your local community college to get hands on experience with the different software before you spend a lot of money on a program you don't like. Spread the word around friends/family that you have a mac and want to make music--maybe someone in your circle has the program already and can teach you how to use it. Each software you mentioned is built to do something different so it depends what you want to do. Do you want to make songs only or do you also want to perform live? Can you play any instruments? Do you already have an instrument with MIDI? You could start making songs right away by plugging in your instruments and use Garageband (you might have to buy some cables to plug into your laptop). You might want to get a cheap sound editor and could use Garageband to multitrack while you consider which software to get. It's crude but better to get those juices flowing and practice using software so you understand what your needs are.
