Help, need an audio expert!?

Ok so basically I am an independent film maker in need of advice for audio. I have a Zoom H1 handy recorder with a lavalier microphone going into it. The microphone is powered by a small button cell battery but unfortunately it seems too quiet. When I turn up the levels on the recorder it becomes noisy and still a little quiet. I want to use a device that will allow me to plug the 3.5mm microphone jack in, increase the decibels and then output the microphone into my recorder. Is this possible?

Yes, that is possible. Microphone definitely need a Mic Preamp to amplify first the very low audio signal it can pick up.

Microphone signals are normally too weak to be transmitted to units such as mixing consoles and recording devices. Preamplifiers increase a microphone signal to line-level (i.e. the level of signal strength required by such devices) by providing stable gain while preventing induced noise that would otherwise distort the signal.
